About Us

We believe that feminist movements should be abundantly resourced to achieve powerful and lasting change for all.

So do our 400+ members.

What we do

We bring together governments, philanthropists, women’s and feminist funds, civil society and other allies to work in partnership to grow both financial and political support for diverse feminist movements.

We build collaborations, share knowledge and work collectively to help these movements thrive.

We’re committed to tackling systemic inequality by supporting the people and organizations working to challenge oppression and advance the rights of women, girls, trans, and gender nonconforming people everywhere.

Vision & Mission

We envision a world in which feminist movements thrive and are abundantly resourced.

We catalyze, build, and sustain multistakeholder collaborations to ensure that feminist movements are abundantly resourced to drive transformative change towards a more just, inclusive world.

Shared Principles & Commitments

  • Centering independent feminist movements in all their diversity

    • We collaborate to harness the expertise, resources, and networks of our members to increase support for independent feminist movements.
    • We center these movements because those directly affected by gender inequality must take the lead in addressing it. They are the ones who need to define the priorities that shape the funding agenda.
    • We’re guided by Action Coalition 6 on Feminist Movements and Leadership. When we refer to feminist movements in ‘all their diversity’, we refer to the fact that feminist and women’s rights movements, organizations, and funds are diverse, and are led by diverse people everywhere, including, but not limited to, trans, intersex and nonbinary people, racialized people, indigenous people, women and people with disabilities, women and people living with and affected by HIV, young feminists, girls, sex workers and other historically marginalized people.
  • Flexible learning and open dialogue

    • We have a flexible approach to our work, recognizing that we’re continuously learning together to change the way feminist movements are funded and supported.
    • The AFM is a space for sharing and building on established ways of resourcing feminist movements, as well as exploring new and emerging strategies.
    • We recognize that we’ll not always share the same perspectives, and we strive to embrace differences of opinion through constructive dialogue.
  • Sharing and equalizing power

    • We recognize that histories of exclusion, exploitation, and discrimination require reconciliation.
    • We recognize that power comes in different forms and that we don’t share power equally. We commit to speaking openly about power and dismantling or mitigating the power hierarchies present in the AFM.
    • This is a place where multiple forms of knowledge – particularly lived experience – will be upheld and celebrated.
  • Creating inclusive spaces

    • We recognize that our feminist practices may look and sound different, but they are united in our fundamental support for the human rights of women and girls in all their diversity.
To build trustful relationships, this is a space that actively breaks down barriers to participation, such as language, time zone, familiarity with global spaces, accessibility, and more.
    • We work together in ways that promote inclusion, respect and learning from each others’ diverse realities.
    • We will not tolerate actions within AFM spaces that reinforce systemic oppression through antagonism, silencing, intimidation, or coercion.
  • Fostering shared responsibilities and benefits

    • As members of the AFM, we uphold our Shared Principles and Commitments in all our actions within this space.
    • All members of the AFM work to ensure that the AFM benefits feminist movements, rather than our respective organizations exclusively.
    • We strive for transparency, responsible use of resources and integrity in the operations of the AFM, building systems that hold the AFM accountable to these values.
  • Celebrating our successes and partnerships

    • We know that we’re engaged in long-term transformative work in which change takes time, and that joy and celebration are important foundations for long-term relationships. We’ll actively and publicly celebrate our successes as individual actors, as well as our collective efforts as AFM members.
    • We recognize that for many members of the AFM, withstanding and surviving the challenges of the current context is, in itself, a major success. We’ll always look for ways to honor and uplift that work as central to the AFM’s mission.
