Feminist Civil SocietyFeminist Civil Society
Feminist civil society are organizations that promote women’s, girls’, trans and/or intersex peoples’ human rights as their primary mission, not just a part of their programs, and are led by the people they aim to serve. These groups do not need to be registered to be part of this constituency.

Private PhilanthropyPrivate Philanthropy
Private philanthropy are donor institutions whose primary function is grantmaking and do not solicit funds from other donors; and donor networks whose primary function is to coordinate memberships of private foundations.

National GovernmentNational Government
National governments include donor and non-donor governments elected through an internationally recognized democratic process. National governments may be represented by whichever agency or ministry the national government deems to be most appropriate. Multiple agencies or ministries may be participants in the AFM.

Other AlliesOther Allies
Other allies include, but are not limited to, multilateral funders and agencies, civil society organizations that don’t meet the criteria for “feminist civil society” above, public foundations, academia, and / or sub-national governments. Institutions in this constituency group will be identified publicly. Individual actors that support our objectives may join under this constituency group, and will not be identified publicly on our website.

Women's and Feminist FundsWomen's and Feminist Funds
Women’s and feminist funds are public fundraising foundations that work to realize the power of grassroots women, girls, and trans people around the world by providing them with financial and other resources to realize their vision of social justice and networks representing women’s and feminist funds. In the context of the AFM, the primary purpose of women’s and feminist funds is to resource, strengthen the capacities of, accompany, and convene grassroots feminist and women’s rights organizations, activists, networks, and movements. Public foundations and other types of intermediary funders are not considered to be part of the women’s and feminist funds constituency group for the AFM.

Responsibilities
These responsibilities ensure the Alliance functions transparently, remains accountable to its members, and stays focused on its feminist values. Current responsibilities are subject to change and may be delegated to sub-groups.

1. Who is eligible to become a member of the Alliance for Feminist Movements?
Organizations from five constituencies are eligible: feminist civil society organizations, women’s/feminist funds, private philanthropic institutions, national governments, and other allies (such as multilateral agencies, academia, or public foundations). Membership is institutional—not individual.

2. What are the benefits of joining the Alliance for Feminist Movements?
Members gain access to a global network, opportunities to collaborate across sectors, join working groups, influence funding strategies, contribute to advocacy efforts, and raise visibility for their work. Members also help shape the AFM’s direction and shared agenda.

3. How can my organization apply to join the Alliance for Feminist Movements?
To apply, fill out the membership application form on our website. You’ll be asked to share basic information about your organization, your main contact person, and a confirmation of your alignment with our Shared Principles & Commitments.

4. Is membership in the Alliance for Feminist Movements free?
Yes. There is currently no cost to become a member. We welcome participation from organizations of all sizes, including those with limited resources.

5. Can individuals join the Alliance for Feminist Movements, or is it only for organizations?
Membership is open to organizations and government institutions only. However, individuals are warmly invited to attend open events, and engage with our work through other channels.

6. What types of organizations can join the Alliance?
Eligible organizations include grassroots feminist groups, funders, international NGOs, government agencies, and other actors working to support feminist movements. Each must align with the AFM’s principles and contribute to collective action.

7. What does it mean to be a member of the Alliance for Feminist Movements?
Membership means joining a global, multi-stakeholder community committed to strengthening feminist movements. Members participate in working groups, share insights and resources, and collaborate on shared goals across regions and sectors.

8. What responsibilities do members of the AFM have?
Members are expected to uphold our Shared Principles, engage with at least one activity per year (such as a working group, consultation, or survey), and support respectful, inclusive collaboration across the network.

9. How long does it take to process a membership application?
Most applications are reviewed within 2–4 weeks. If further information is needed, we’ll contact your designated focal point.

10. Will my organization be listed publicly as a member of the AFM?
Yes. The name, sector, and country of each member institution will appear on our website. Individual staff names will not be shared publicly.
